A New ERA at Historic Saga Kino in Oslo, Norway

Saga Kino has been a true landmark of Oslo ever since it first opened its doors on February 15, 1934, designed by architects Gudolf Blakstad and Herman Munthe-Kaas. Even after a major modernization, much of its original character has been carefully preserved — including the iconic mosaic columns and the grand staircase leading down to the basement level.
The cinema was first rebuilt in 1981, when it became Norway’s first multiplex with six screens, and then renovated again in 2007. Today, Saga Kino is entering a new era — one defined by premium comfort and cutting-edge technology.

On the ground floor, the flagship Supreme 1 and Supreme 2 auditoriums offer 241 and 73 seats, respectively. On the basement level, four more intimate rooms provide 79, 50, 36, and 19 seats, bringing the total capacity to 498. Together, they allow Saga Kino to combine large-scale premiere screenings with the cozy atmosphere of boutique-style auditoriums.
As part of the latest upgrade, the cinema was equipped with state-of-the-art Christie RGB pure laser projectors, delivering outstanding brightness, contrast, and image stability. The two premium auditoriums now feature full Dolby Atmos configurations for deeply immersive, three-dimensional sound. All auditoriums are fitted with fully reclining seats — a level of comfort unmatched by any other cinema in Oslo. Thoughtful room geometry and a refreshed interior complete the experience, turning Saga Kino into a next-generation cinema that still honors its heritage.

For the audio side, Nordisk Film chose MAG Cinema’s top-tier ERA series for the two Supreme Dolby Atmos rooms for the very first time. The largest auditorium is powered by flagship ERA 5 screen systems, while the mid-sized room features the more compact ERA 2. Both models combine Spread Array MF technology for controlled, predictable midrange behavior with a Coverage Control HF Waveguide using Pure Beryllium Titanium Nitride HF diaphragms, delivering uniform vertical and horizontal coverage and exceptional detail throughout the room. Their passive cardioid LF sections minimize unwanted reflections from the back wall, improve low-frequency control, and reduce sound leakage into adjacent spaces.

The other auditoriums at Saga Kino are equipped with proven MAG Cinema SCR-series screen systems paired with a wide range of subwoofers and surround loudspeakers. This ensures a consistent sonic “signature” across the entire venue.
